Saturday's/Sunday's Bread has been serving free hot meals to people in need in Boston every weekend day for 25 years.   To volunteer or donate, please contact one of the people listed below.

Saturday’s/Sunday’s Bread is a program that serves free hot meals to people in need in Boston every Saturday and Sunday at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 35 Bowdoin Street, Boston. Our mission is to provide these healthy meals in a safe and inviting atmosphere, free from Society’s prejudices and judgments. We ask only that those served, regardless of their situation, join us in perpetuating an environment free of racial, cultural or religious stereotypes. This is an interfaith, interracial, interdenominational activity of people concerned with the hungry in the Boston area.

Over the course of its 25 years, Saturday’s/Sunday’s Bread has served more than 300,000 guests.

Those who partake are served in a dining room setting, eight guests to a table. The meals are hot and nutritious and include fruit juice, a garden salad, a main course, dessert, coffee and, of course, bread; they are prepared fresh on site in the hours before the guests arrive, then served to the tables by volunteers

How It Works
Saturday’s/Sunday’s Bread is an entirely volunteer organization. There are no paid employees. Instead, the work is all done by volunteers from 40 organizations from all over the Boston area – churches, temples, college and university groups, fraternal organizations, businesses, etc. -- who give freely of their time, labor and funds.
Each Saturday and Sunday, teams of five people from three or four member organizations meet at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 35 Bowdoin Street in Boston. Shifts run from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM Saturdays and Sundays. The work includes food preparation, table setup, meal service and cleanup.  For full details, click here.

Commitment of Member Groups
1. Send a team of four to six volunteers on a regular schedule that you determine: every four or six or eight weeks -- or once or twice a year. To initiate a program, this means establishing a group of 20 to 25 potential volunteers.  For management efficiency, most of our volunteers are organized in groups; however if you would like to volunteer as an individual on Saturdays, please contact Richard Wheeler (see below).
2. Designate one or two coordinators who can organize the group for each scheduled Saturday or Sunday and serve as a contact point for the Teams Coordinators.
3. Designate a delegate to attend board meetings three times a year.
4. Commit to an annual financial contribution.
